VIC:Huge crowds for Melbourne NYE celebrations

MELBOURNE, Jan 1 AAP - A scorching hot day and the threat of evening thunderstorms
were not enough to stop huge crowds attending New Year's Eve celebrations in Melbourne's
CBD.

While early forecasts predicted thunderstorms on Friday, sparking concern that the
$256,000 fireworks displays may have to be cancelled, the New Year's Eve celebrations
saw balmy evening weather in the city.

The crowds in the city for the midnight fireworks was estimated at 480,000. This was
