QLD: Biker killed in police chase

By Dale Paget

GOLD COAST, Dec 17 AAP - A member of the Odins Warriors motorcycle gang was killed
and his female passenger was critically injured in a high speed police chase on the M1
motorway between the Gold Coast and Brisbane tonight.

The motorcycle rider had allegedly broken the speed limit and was being pursued by
a marked police car.

Acting Inspector, Dave McAully, said police called off the pursuit because of high
speed before the motorcycle left the highway and crashed into a railing at Helensvale
at about 7.45pm.

The rider was killed instantly. His female passenger suffered serious injuries and
was rushed to the Gold Coast hospital.

The Traffic Accident Investigation squad and members of the Ethical Standards Commission
have begun an investigation.

Police believe the pair may have attended a motorcycle gang memorial earlier in the day.

Acting Inspector McAully said the marked police car had been following several motorcycles.

"The Odins Warriors and the Finks were in the particular group of motorcycles on the
motorway," he said.

"One of the group of motorcycles sped away from the group. Our marked car followed the vehicle."

Information on the speeds reached in the chase has not been released but Acting Inspector
McAully said the instruction to "back off" came before the high speed crash.
