Corinthians drops to second division in Brazilian championship

Corinthians managed only to draw Gremio 1-1 in the final round of the Brazilian championship on Sunday, sending the four-time champion from Sao Paulo to the second division.

Corinthians needed a win to avoid relegation and was stunned in the first minute by a goal from Gremio's Jonas.

Clodoaldo's equalizer in the 30th minute revived Corinthians, but Gremio kept the pressure on and Corinthians didn't have an answer.

The draw left Corinthians 17th in the 20-team standings with 44 points, one less than Goias.

Goias beat Internacional 2-1 to overtake Corinthians and prevent demotion.
