Fed: Cabinet to consider Budget today
CANBERRA, April 15 AAP - Cabinet is expected to consider the $1.2 billion higher educationBudget today including $200 million to boost the quality of university teaching.
The National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) said it was difficult to assess the packagebefore the Budget's unveiling on May 13.
"But we suspect this is a bit of an attempt to sort of buy out some of the regionaluniversities out of research essentially," an NTEU spokesman said.
"We would be very concerned if that $200 million was some way of buying out, particularlyregional universities, buying them out of research activities."
Prime Minister John Howard indicated health would top the domestic spending agendain next month's Budget as the government came under increased pressure to provide taxcuts.
Mr Howard said the government was determined to hand down another Budget surplus, withthe $2.1 billion forecast this year looking shaky as the costs of war and peace in Iraqmount.
