FED:Judge delays deportation to Malaysia
Lawyer DAVID MANNE from the Refugee and Immigration Legal Centre says his injunction
seeking to stop the deportation of the asylum seekers deals with life and death matters.
The injunction has been granted at a special hearing of the court in Melbourne tonight
resulting in an order to delay in the departure of the first asylum seekers to Malaysia
under Australia's swap deal with that country.
Justice KENNETH HAYNE has ordered the asylum seekers, due to leave Australia at 11.30am
(AEST) tomorrow, not depart before 4.15pm (AEST), pending the hearing of another application
in the High Court in Canberra at 2.15pm (AEST).
Mr MANNE says Malaysia has a longstanding record of serious mistreatment of asylum
seekers and refugees, including beatings, whippings, canings and deportation.
A boat carrying fifty passengers and two crew was intercepted in Australian waters
on this morning as the government was prepared to fly some asylum seekers already detained
on Christmas Island to Kuala Lumpur.
Today's boat was the second to arrive since the government last month signed a deal
to send eight hundred asylum seekers to Malaysia in return for accepting four thousand
processed refugees.

VIC:Bridge dad rants after life sentence
By Daniel Fogarty
MELBOURNE, April 11 AAP - The murder of toddler Darcey Freeman, whose father threw
her to her death off Melbourne's West Gate Bridge, has been described by a judge as an
attack on the institution of the family.
As he sentenced Arthur Phillip Freeman to life in jail, Justice Paul Coghlan said his
crime could not have been more horrible.
"Your crime is a most fundamental breach of trust and it is an attack on the institution
of the family which is so dear to the community," Justice Coghlan said.
The sentence, which carried a 32-year minimum, prompted a bizarre reaction from Freeman
who launched into a rant against his former in-laws.
But his reaction did nothing to detract from the scathing words of Justice Coghlan.
Freeman, the judge said, used Darcey to hurt his former wife Peta Barnes "as profoundly
as possible".
Justice Coghlan described Freeman as a self-centred murderer who chose a murder site
that would have the most dramatic impact.
Freeman remained silent and expressionless as Justice Coghlan described him throwing
Darcey from the bridge.
"This was the killing of an innocent child," he said.
"The throwing of your four-year-old daughter from a bridge more than 58 metres above
the ground could not be more horrible.
"What Darcey's last thoughts might have been does not bear thinking about and her death
must have been a painful and protracted one."
After the sentence was delivered, Freeman, who had remained silent during his trial
and throughout Monday's sentencing, announced he wished to make a statement.
He then started making accusations against a member of his ex-wife's family.
Freeman was restrained by guards and pulled from the court dock.
The Barnes family, who had shown little emotion as the sentence was delivered, appeared
amused by the outburst.
They were among about 100 people crammed into the Victorian Supreme Court room for the sentence.
In an unusual and telling reflection of the impact of Darcy's murder, members of the
jury who rejected Freeman's defence that he was "mad not bad" returned to court to hear
the sentence.
The wider effect of the crime on Melbourne was highlighted by the live broadcast on
television and radio of Justice Coghlan's sentencing address.
Justice Coghlan said many people would believe that Freeman deserved to be locked away forever.
But he said the complex sentencing process required him to consider many factors.
"Whatever happens, you will spend what may be regarded by many as the best years of
your life in prison," he said.
"I do not regard you as being beyond redemption."
But Justice Coghlan also said Freeman was remorseless.
"Your behaviour through the whole of this period of your life was self-centred, with
a strong tendency to blame others," he said.
"You are yet to say sorry to anyone for what you have done."
On Monday, as he did throughout the trial, Freeman wore a dark suit.
A small tuft of hair stuck up on the top of his bald head, with unkempt, long strands
at the back.
His hair, combined with his thick beard, were a stark contrast to the short-haired,
clean-shaven man captured on CCTV footage the day he murdered his daughter.
Minutes before the murder on January 29, 2009, Freeman telephoned Ms Barnes and told
her to "say goodbye to your children".
He parked his four-wheel drive in the left-hand emergency lane of the bridge, coaxed
Darcey out the car and picked her up.
Freeman then carried the child in his arms to the edge of the bridge and threw her over the edge.
His oldest son Ben, six, and youngest son Jack, two, watched the murder from the car.
"The community only hopes Jack will be too young to remember," Justice Coghlan said.
Freeman, 37, will be 67 when he is eligible for release in January 2041.

FED:Labor slack on security: opposition
SYDNEY, Aug 13 AAP - The Federal Opposition has accused the Labor Government of neglecting
counter-terrorism and national security issues.
"There has been a deficiency of attention on behalf of senior ministers," shadow attorney-general
George Brandis said on Friday.
"There's no doubt at all that if you look at the budget measures, if you look at the
level of attention and respect afforded to national security issues by the former prime
minister and the current prime minister ... there has been a deprioritisation."
The accusation comes after Prime Minister Julia Gillard admitted sending her bodyguard,
Andrew Stark, to several National Security Committee meetings, during her time as deputy
prime minister.
Senator Brandis said a coalition government would do better.
"Certainly you would have a prime minister and senior ministers who pay more attention
to these matters, particularly matters of national security."
He was speaking during a debate in Sydney with Attorney-General Robert McClelland.
The role of the attorney-general should be afforded more respect and national security
agencies should be given more resources than under Labor, Senator Brandis said.
Mr McClelland said the attorney-general's portfolio currently spent around $1.2 billion
a year on national security issues.
But he said more needed to be done to develop policies countering violent extremism
and Australia's combined intelligence capabilities.
Earlier in the debate, Senator Brandis said a coalition government would reform freedom
of information laws and drive a "right to know agenda".
"A coalition government would transfer responsibility for freedom of information laws
from a special minister of state to the attorney-general's portfolio," Senator Brandis
said.
"And a pro-disclosure culture will be observed in fact, not merely in rhetoric."

Qld: Reef faces future threat from more LNG, coal exports
Eds: Adds latest Bob Brown quotes in 5th, 6th, 7th pars
By Jessica Marszalek
BRISBANE, April 5 AAP - The Queensland government is under pressure to safeguard the
Great Barrier Reef against shipping threats as it ramps up coal and liquefied natural
gas (LNG) exports.
The 230m Chinese coal ship Shen Neng 1 ran aground about 70km east of Great Keppel
Island on Saturday, spilling two tonnes of oil into protected marine park waters.
The bulk carrier remains in danger of breaking apart and damaging the marine environment
by releasing 950 tonnes of heavy fuel oil and its cargo of 65,000 tonnes of coal into
the sea.
Environmentalists and politicians say the risk of such accidents will only increase
as Queensland increases resources exports.
Greens leader Bob Brown said the reef was recklessly being used as a "coal highway".
He said the coal industry was not just threatening the reef from climate change, but
from spills too.
"It's absolutely clear that the threat is not only real but the reef is going to come
to grief," he said.
Mr Brown said the crisis would not have happened if a pilot had been aboard to guide
the ship on its journey up the coast. The Queensland opposition says a lack of radar coverage
of ships in the area is also a problem.
Queensland Premier Anna Bligh said requiring local pilots on board ships in Great Barrier
Reef waters and better tracking systems could help mitigate risks to the reef from shipping.
"We have a premier spruiking the wonders of building a whole new LNG industry (and)
a three- or four-times expansion of the coal industry in Queensland," Capricorn Conservation
Council's vice president Ian Herbert said.
"The numbers of ships that are going to be plying these waters will greatly increase,
increasing the likelihood of similar events in the future."
The Australian Conservation Foundation has called for export ships to sail south on
their way to the Pacific Ocean, instead of taking the northerly course up the Queensland
coast.
Ms Bligh said she realised shipping traffic would increase, and maritime authorities
had already been working on a risk analysis looking at issues such as mandatory pilots
aboard cargo and freight vessels.
Environmental groups also say not enough is being done to understand the effects of
a large-scale coal spill, especially considering the sharp rise in coal shipments.
"It's a wake-up call to all of us," the WWF's Gilly Llewellyn said.
"It's time to have a strategic look at all aspects around the growth and development
of the coal industry in Queensland and the environmental consequences that come along
with that growth."
Federal Opposition Leader Tony Abbott and Greens leader Bob Brown called on Prime Minister
Kevin Rudd to personally take charge of the situation.

SA: State ministers warn about action on housing agreement
ADELAIDE, Aug 24 AAP - State and territory housing ministers say a federal government
plan to scrap the commonwealth-states housing agreement will destroy 60 years of cooperation.
The ministers have written to Families and Community Services Minister Mal Brough saying
the plan will hurt those most in need.
Mr Brough has warned he would redirect federal funding to the private sector because
the current system was not working.
South Australian Housing Minister Jay Weatherill said the announcement represented
an extremist policy on the future of social housing.
"The Howard government plans to force the states to compete against the private sector
in the delivery of social housing," Mr Weatherill said.
"The plan will not only make it more difficult for battling families to get access
to affordable rental housing, but will jeopardise the system for those already in it."
Mr Weatherill said since 1996 the commonwealth had slashed funding to South Australia
through the housing agreement by 36 per cent.
He said this had been a significant factor in forcing the state government to reduce
the number of houses it rented out to low-income earners.
"For years state and territory housing ministers have been calling on the federal government
to work in partnership with us to increase the supply of affordable housing," Mr Weatherill
said.
"We remain 100 per cent committed to a national housing agreement."

Fed: New air travel liquid restrictions apply from March
CANBERRA, Dec 8 AAP - Air travellers entering and leaving Australia will face new restrictions
on liquids carried in hand luggage from early next year.
The move follows the arrest in the United Kingdom of terrorism suspects plotting to
blow up airliners using the ingredients of liquid explosive smuggled aboard in hand luggage.
Transport Minister Mark Vaile said today that the government would introduce the new
hand luggage restrictions in late March.
"As a result of vulnerabilities exposed in the UK in August with regard to liquids
being carried in hand luggage onto international flights, the government this week has
taken a decision that as of March 31 next year, all international travellers, both outbound
and inbound, ... will need to be restricted in the carriage of liquids, aerosols and gels
to 100 millilitre containers," he told ABC Radio.
"Those containers will need to be carried in a one litre clear plastic bag in hand
luggage and separately screened in the way, for example, that laptop computer batteries
are separately screened."
Mr Vaile said the regulations did not apply to liquids in checked luggage, only hand luggage.
He said there would be exceptions for passengers with medical conditions who needed
particular medications and also for quantities of baby milk or baby food required for
the flight.
They would still have to be screened, he said, adding that experience abroad had shown
that the extra screening did not cause much inconvenience or delay.

'RINGS' VS. RAIN FRODO FANS RALLY FOR MOVIE TRAILER.(News)
Byline: Jennifer Hamm Staff Writer
BURBANK - After driving 215 miles from the Yosemite Valley, David Schulze stood 12 hours in the pouring rain outside the AMC Theaters before rushing inside Friday to grab a prime seat - not for the premiere of a star-studded epic movie, but the one-minute, 46-second preview for one.
He and about 20 other hard-core fans of J.R.R. Tolkien's ``Lord of the Rings'' withstood rain and bone-chilling cold in order to see the trailer for the movie version of the classic fantasy trilogy, scheduled for release Dec. 19.
``Waiting overnight was nothing,'' said Schulze, a 45-year-old construction worker who first entered Tolkien's world of hobbits and wizards as a teen-ager. ``I've been waiting since 1973.''
Schulze and the other fans gathered in front of the AMC theaters on Palm Avenue well before midnight Thursday. They erected a makeshift tent to keep dry, then roasted marshmallows and posted live updates of their escapade on the Internet.
``The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring,'' to be released by New Line Cinema, stars Elijah Wood, Cate Blanchett, Ian McKellen, Ian Holm and Liv Tyler. And although its premier is nearly a year away, fans of the Tolkien trilogy already are in a frenzy over the first installment.
New Line reported 10 million hits on the official site - www.lordoftherings.net - within the first 10 hours of its Friday launch. There are some 400 other Web sites, most run by fan groups, and New Line executives have worked closely with some of them, providing regular production updates.
When a trailer for the trilogy was released on the Internet last year, there were 1.7 million downloads in the first day, New Line executives say. That beat the 1.1 million downloads for the most recent ``Star Wars'' movie trailer.
Seeing the trailer for ``The Fellowship of the Ring'' on the big screen was worth the overnight wait for Jon Cline, a 23-year-old Pasadena resident, who worked closely with New Line to coordinate the event. The trailer ran twice on Friday - once before the screening of ``Thirteen Days,'' and once after.
``You pick up stuff the second time,'' said Cline, who runs the newly established Tolkien Guild Web site. ``It was a good trailer. It had a lot of depth to it.''
Cline and others conceded Friday that they were expecting a far bigger turnout for the trailer's debut but attributed the low numbers to the bad weather. The small turnout is not reflective of the Tolkien loyalists.
``Tolkien's work has such a deep history,'' Cline said. ``Because of that, the fan base is very rich and established.''
In print, ``The Lord of the Rings'' is a 1,200-page trilogy that was written over 14 years and enjoyed rave reviews when the works were first published in the mid-1950s. The books quickly gained and have maintained a cult status, especially among college students.
The fantasy world created by Tolkien is what attracted Markus Watson to the ``Lord of the Rings'' trilogy. But it was the chance to spend time with other Tolkien fans that compelled him to spend the night outside as temperatures dipped into the 40s.
``Being the first in line wasn't really the point,'' said Watson, 28, of Arcadia. ``The point was getting together with people who are just as excited as you are.''
Watson has plenty of experience waiting on line for movies. He camped out in front of Mann's Chinese Theater for a whole month before ``Episode 1'' of the ``Star Wars'' series was released.
Watson said this time around he won't wait as long. For ``The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring,'' he's willing to camp out for only three weeks.

Greg Manning Auctions, Inc. (NASDAQ: GMAI) announced today that the Company's Board of Directors has approved a plan whereby the Company may buy back up to 500,000 shares of its Common Stock.
The shares will be purchased on the open market from time-to-time, depending on market price or as the Company otherwise deems appropriate. The price GMAI will pay for the shares will not exceed the highest independent bid or independent sale price of the Company's stock on the Nasdaq National Market, whichever is higher. In general, on any given day GMAI will not repurchase more than 25% of the average daily trading volume of GMAI common stock for the four weeks preceding the week in which the purchase was made, excluding block trades.
Greg Manning, Chairman and CEO of Greg Manning Auctions, stated, "We are pleased with the Board's decision to authorize the Company's repurchase of its shares on the open market. A number of exciting developments have recently occurred for the Company, including the strategic agreement between our subsidiary GMAI-Asia.com and Sina.Com (NASDAQ: SINA), which broadens the reach of GMAI-Asia.com's iAtoZ.com website to Sina.com's 3.1 million registered users, and the strategic agreement between GMAI-Asia.com and the China Everbright Group Limited (SHEK: 256), which permitted us to implement our "clicks and mortar" strategy in China. In addition, on Monday, April 17, 2000, we announced the commencement of our joint marketing agreement with Amazon.com (NASDAQ: AMZN) and the launch of the www.gregmanning.amazon.com pages on Amazon.com's auction and zShops sites. The GMAI pages on Amazon.com feature thousands of collectibles under the Greg Manning banner and we believe that the agreement will have a positive impact on the Company. Further, GMAI-Europe.com's website has launched and aggressive expansion in both Europe and Latin America is being planned in concert with Afinsa Bienes Tangibles S.A., of Madrid, Spain. In light of these developments, the Board and I believe that the Common Stock is an attractive investment, particularly in view of the current price and the Company's aggressive plans for growth."
The repurchase program supports the recent investments GMAI has received. During the last quarter, several hundred-thousand shares of the Company's Common Stock was purchased by The Tail Wind Fund Ltd. and its co-investors and by Eisenberg Partners, LLP in the high teens to low twenties. Additionally, Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ NM: AMZN) made a $5 million investment in the Company. Retailers embrace ad retargeting.
Retargeting sees growing popularity with online retailers as they gain healthy returns of over 20:1
All Saints, Game, Karen Millen and New Look are among retail brands investing in ad retargeting, with the practice set to become a key driver in display advertising's resurgence in 2011.
Other brands running retargeting marketing activity include Boden, Etam, French Connection, Glasses Direct, John Lewis, MyWardrobe, Orange, Ted Baker and TheTrainline Company.
Retargeting serves 'reminder' ads to users after they've visited a retailer's site without making a purchase, in a bid to lure them back.
It's the fastest growing performance channel for New Look, according to the company's ecommerce performance marketing manager Rav Dhaliwal, who believes ad retargeting will play a central role in the retailer's international growth.
Fashion brand All Saints is also shifting budget towards retargeting activity after generating return
of #21 for every #1 it spent on retargeted ads throughout November and December last year.
Marti Crampshee, All Saints digital communications manager, said advancements in retargeting technology have meant a significant return on investment for the brand.
"The idea of personalised retargeting isn't new in terms of display ads, but this is the first time we've seen such fantastic ROI," he said. "The practice is now more technologically led. It was this that enabled us to target our display ads and messaging in the right way, at the right time, to the right people. As a result, we're looking at personalised retargeting becoming a key element in all of our digital activity."
New Look's Dhaliwal said retargeting was the company's first real foray into performance display advertising and was proving extremely effective.
"It's more engaging, easier to budget for and is a great source of acquisition for us," he said. "It'll be a big part of our global strategy."
He added that while retargeting has been successful for New Look, it might not be suitable for all retailers. "It works for us because our core audience is an internet-savvy consumer who's often engaged with social media. They're not so concerned when retargeted," he said. "It's important for brands to be compliant with regulations and tell users they're being retargeted, giving them a chance to opt out. We've found that most retargeted users return to the site to make a purchase within the first 24 hours. Frequency capping is important. The number of users interacting with your ad diminishes rapidly and they navigate away if there's overkill."
Retargeting company Struq said that ad retargeting had generated conversions of up to 640% for its top ten clients, while rival Criteo said it's working with more than 200 UK advertisers to offer retargeting.
Fitness and training supplements brand Maximuscle saw a significant increase in online conversions of 362% as a result of retargeting display ads alongside its paid and natural search marketing (nma 21 October 2010). Dhaliwal said that the growing sophistication of retargeting had helped advertisers get beyond the negative conceptions around performance-based display ads.
"In the past it's been a publisher's metric, and it's not been geared toward the commercial need of the advertisers. But with retargeting, it's more engaging," he said.
According to Criteo UK MD Michael Steckler, "A key driver of this has been the reassessment by brands that display can now deliver a performance-based marketing channel with the added benefit of branding. What has accelerated growth is that brands tend to check their competitors' websites and often get in touch because they're interested to know what it's about."
Retargeting's move into mainstream online marketing is because it has resolved the issue of how to incorporate user intent - the key concept of search - into display advertising, according to Sam Barnett, CEO of Struq.
"Ads are personalised and based on user intent," he said. "They're relevant and, as such, people click them and buy products and services. It's growing thanks to sophisticated advancements in technology. Whereas display used to be highly ineffective, it has now become more effective than search."
Performance across all categories, including fashion, retail and travel, has been strong, according to Steckler, but click-throughs for classifieds sites, such as Zoopla, have seen the highest rates.
Last October, a US-based ComScore study with ValueClick Media found retargeting generated the highest lift in search queries - up to 1,046%.
Global online media companies including Yahoo and Deutsche Telekom have shown interest in retargeting in the past six months. Yahoo bought retargeting specialist Dapper in October to bolster its SmartAds offering, while Deutsche Telekom's venture capital firm T-Venture invested #3.76m in retargeting firm MyThings.
Targeting timeline
April 2008 The IAB establishes a taskforce to set best practices for behavioural targeting
August 2010 A Sunday Times article creates hysteria over targeted advertising online
October 2010 ComScore US study with ValueClick suggests that retargeting gives the greatest lift in search
October 2010 Yahoo acquires US display advertising startup Dapper as it looks to bolster its Smart Ads offering and take on retargeting players such as Criteo and Struq
November 2010 Deutsche Telekom's venture capital firm T-Venture invests #3.76m in ad retargeting firm MyThings to support the company's expansion in Europe and the UK
NMA VIEWPOINT
A widespread acceptance of retargeting has been fuelled by both its effectiveness and its openness with consumers. While it's easy to eulogise about how effective retargeting is as a display performance channel when it comes to customer acquisition, the right frequency capping and recommendations are essential to getting the balance between a gentle reminder and being downright annoying. There's nothing worse than being served an ad for a product you've already bought but could now get cheaper.
Retargeting is also growing in acceptance, not just among marketers but consumers too, because the purchase intent is clearer than with behavioural targeting. Users can remember why they visited a site, but they don't necessarily know what sites belong to a behavioural targeting network. Gina Lovett

SITA and Orange Business Services sign agreement for global 2G/3G connectivity.
SITA becomes first global mobile data services provider for air transport industry
Paris - SITA announced that it has become the world's first global mobile data services provider dedicated to the air transport industry. Through a partnership agreement with Orange Business Services, the air transport communications specialist is providing global data connectivity to airlines enabling the secure use of mobile data, machine-to-machine (M2M) and application to person (A2P) technologies worldwide.
Orange Business Services and its International M2M Centre (IMC) is supplying SITA with 2G/3G data connectivity with extensive availability and international coverage that includes in excess of 400 roaming agreements in more than 180 countries. This connectivity has the added advantage of 100% national roaming so that SITA's airline customers always benefit from the best, and most cost-effective, network.
SITA already provides a mobile workforce solution to airlines that are today embracing mobile data applications such as electronic flight bags (EFBs), wireless bag management and mobile passenger applications. By becoming the first global mobile data services provider for the industry, SITA now delivers a one-stop-shop solution that includes middleware, managed devices, Wi-Fi connectivity at airports and global 3G data connectivity.
Francesco Violante, CEO, SITA said: "As the adoption of mobile devices and data transfer soars worldwide, the air transport industry requires a high-performing, cost-effective service that provides consistent connectivity globally. SITA has partnered with Orange Business Services because it provides global coverage at competitive rates. Together we are combining this high standard of data connectivity with SITA's knowledge of the air transport industry to make the use of mobile applications most effective."
Vivek Badrinath, Senior Executive Vice President for Enterprise Services at France Telecom Orange and CEO of Orange Business Services, said: "We are proud to add mobile data connectivity to our ten-year partnership with SITA on a large portfolio of telecommunications services. And we are happy to provide Orange's extensive experience of over ten years in M2M as well as the expertise developed by our International M2M Centre and the key role our group plays in M2M standardization. Combined with SITA's industry expertise, it will provide the air transport industry with a service that is specifically designed for this unique sector.
"Thanks to more than 400 roaming agreements and central monitoring capabilities, the headache of negotiating and managing multiple agreements in different regions will be eliminated for airlines. In addition, our capacity to provide several network partners in a single country, and to connect airline data centres via Orange's global MPLS network, will ensure that airlines will always get both the best quality and the most economical service in any country with secured connections everywhere in the world."
The size of the mobile data market is significant and growing 25% annually; according to Berg Insight more than 187 million cellular connections are expected in 2014 (1). To effectively handle this scale of traffic requires not only connectivity but also a close understanding of application and context specifics. SITA's service, designed for the unique needs of the global air transport industry, includes end-to-end infrastructure, a managed SIMs supply chain and self-care administration portal for optimized use.
Violante added: "SITA believes that the industry is crying out for a global secure network for mobile devices. In particular, performance and security are concerns for critical applications such as EFBs which are used to download flight plans and other data for pilots. Our new service, SITA Mobile Data Access, provides by default an access point name (APN) to each customer and can offer virtual private network (VPN) tunnels to ensure the security for such M2M data communications."
SITA now offers the industry all major connectivity technology: wireline, Wi-Fi and cellular (2G/3G) and is providing wireless connectivity in more than 180 countries.

Hide files within files for better data security.
Steganography is a form of security through obscurity in which information is hidden within an unusual medium. An artist might paint a coded message into a portrait, for instance, or an author embed words in the text. A traditional paper watermark is a well-known example of steganography in action. At first glance, there would appear to be nothing unusual about the work, but a recipient aware of the presence of the hidden message would be able to extract it easily. In the computer age, steganography has become more of a science than an art.
Those intent on hiding information from prying eyes can embed data in the many different file types that are ostensibly music files (mp3), images (jpeg), video (mpeg4) or word-processing documents. Unfortunately, there is a limit to how much hidden data can be embedded in such files without it becoming apparent that something is hidden because the file size increases beyond what one might expect to see for a common music or video file, for instance. A five minute music file in mp3 format and the widespread sampling rate of 128 kilobits per second, for instance, is expected to be about 5 megabytes in size. Much bigger and suspicions would be aroused as to the true nature of the file, examination with widely available mp3-tagging software would reveal something amiss with the file's contents. The same could be said for almost all other file types.
However, one group of files that vary enormously in size and are usually rather difficult to examine in detail because they comprise of compiled computer code are executable, or exe, files. These files tend to contain lots of what might be described as "junk data" of their own as well as internal programmer notes and identifiers, redundant sections of code and infuriatingly in some senses coding "bloat". All of this adds up to large and essentially random file sizes for exe files. As such, it might be possible to embed and hide large amounts of data in encoded form in an exe file without disrupting the file's ability to be executed, or run, as a program but crucially without anyone discovering that the exe file has a dual function.
Computer scientists Rajesh Kumar Tiwari of the GLNA Institute of Technology, in Mathura and G. Sahoo of the Birla Institute of Technology, in Mesra, Ranchi, India, have developed just such an algorithm for embedding hidden data in an executable file. They provide details in the International Journal of Internet Technology and Secured Transactions. The algorithm has been built into a program with graphical user interface that would take a conventional exe file and the data to be hidden as input and merge the two producing a viable exe file with a hidden payload. The technology could be used on smart phones, tablet PCs, portable media players and any other information device on which a user might wish to hide data.

Polish city of Wroclaw expands wireless network.(POLAND)
The total number of public wireless Internet (Wi-Fi) access points in the city of Wroclaw has increased to 42. The Poland-based city has taken a number of steps in the recent past to make high-speed wireless Internet available to as many people as possible. Wroclaw has even submitted an official request to the European Union for expanding its wireless network into other areas of the city. If it manages to seal the funding deal, it would be able to increase the total number of hotspots to 100 by 2013.

Travel Industry "Secretly Hoping for an Early England Exit" says ulookubook.com.
The World Cup is having an unpredictable impact on holiday bookings, according to travel experts ulookubook.com. The situation isn't 100% clear yet but one thing is very clear. The travel industry is facing an interesting few weeks.
(PRWeb UK) June 6, 2010 -- The so-called 'World Cup effect' is making itself felt in various ways as fans plan their summer's football viewing. Some are putting their holidays off until after the World Cup, choosing to stay at home and enjoy the excitement in the UK's pubs, living rooms and outdoor spaces on big screens. Television sales are spiralling, especially High Definition and extra-large screen TVs. Others are planning their summer holidays around the tournament, picking resorts they know are geared up to show every game.
The most popular Word Cup destinations so far are Tenerife holidays and cheap holidays to Egypt, with holidays in Sharm el Sheikh a firm favourite. The great thing about traditional holidays to Tenerife is the whole place is in love with the beautiful game. Because most tourists visiting Tenerife are from the UK and Germany, the island is laying on football at every opportunity. In fact you'll be hard pushed to find a bar without a massive screen, ready and waiting for the big event.
But it isn't all good news. What if your partner loves football but you hate it? The travel industry would be forgiven for being concerned. Many such couples might decide staying at home is the best bet rather than spending most of their time on holiday arguing about watching the footie.
"The problem is, unlike most summers it's really difficult to predict demand this year" says Ian Raine, Media Manager at ulookubook.com. "If they're unlucky the travel industry could end up with a glut of bookings at either end of the Cup but not much during it. There could be a huge and sudden surge in demand for low cost last minute holidays if England falls at the first hurdle. Or everyone might feel so depressed if England are sent home early that we all stay home. We just don't know."
Whatever happens, it wouldn't be a surprise if the travel industry was collectively holding its breath, secretly hoping England are knocked out early. At least then they'd know what was what. It could turn out that Scotland fans aren't the only people hoping for an early England exit!

Jamming spam.(controlling junk e-mail)(Brief Article)
No, we're not talking about some odd new cuisine here, but rather a plague: the problem of junk e-mail. Known in the Internet culture as "spam," junk e-mail can be mass mailings to bulletin boards, newsgroups, or lists of people. While mailings from listserves that you subscribe to can be helpful, spam mailings can be annoying. Spam mail can also use up considerable resources on the Net. At some Internet service providers, as much as 10% of their resources is devoted to handling junk e-mail.
How do the spammers -- the companies that distribute e-mail ads -- get your e-mail address in the first place? One way is simply from online directories. These databases, such as Bigfoot (http://www.bigfoot.com/) and Four11 (http://www.four11.com/) house extensive collections of addresses. Another way is by using software robots that traverse the Net and look for addresses, focusing specifically on the @ sign in World Wide Web pages or newsgroups. This means that if you have put your e-mail address on your lab, university, or company Web page, it is fair game for the "spambots." Newsgroup fishing for e-mail addresses in particular is very easy and efficient. For example, if you post to a newsgroup discussing computer software, the spammer already has a clue to target you with junk e-mail advertising software.
How to avoid the spam? There are three different strategies: protect your e-mail address, use several e-mail addresses, or filter your e-mail.
Strategy 1: To protect your e-mail address, you can send your outgoing messages through an intermediate program called a remailer. This software (usually free) strips the header fields from the message so that the recipient never gets your original address. If you want the recipient to have the ability to send you a reply, you can use a remailer service that tags on its own special address, such as msg1233@remailer.com. During the return trip, the remailer then acts as a switchboard to direct the message back to you. In fact, a remailer can strip the addresses on the reverse path as well so that the entire communication is anonymous. To find out more about how to use remailers, check out http://www.well.com/ user/abacard/remail.html.
Strategy 2: Use multiple e-mail addresses. If you intend to post to newsgroups or participate in mailing lists, this is an appealing option. The idea is to have a set of public e-mail addresses that are used exclusively for public purposes. That way, when the inevitable spamming comes, the damage is localized to just these e-mail boxes. To make it even easier to switch e-mail accounts, you can take advantage of the fact that you can now get free addresses that can be accessed through a Web browser. One popular free service is Hotmail (http://www.hotmail.com/). The e-mail service acts like a post office box for regular mail.
Strategy 3: Block incoming spam with software filters. This can be done in two ways: by using the filtering capabilities of your e-mail program or by acquiring a separate anti-spam filter. In the Pro version of the e-mail program Eudora, for example, you can set any number of filters that examine the headers or body of incoming mail. If you get spam from one particular address or it has phrases such as "make money quick" in the subject, it is easy to configure a blocking filter. However, the spammers usually change their address, so you have to change the filter as well. That is where anti-spamming software is useful. This software looks at your e-mail before your mail program does. The better software is designed such that it can learn about new spamming operations and adapt. For the Mac, there is really only one antispammer program, called Spam Blaster (http://www.cnet.com/Resources/ Swcentral/Mac/Result/Download/ 0,162,39634,00.html). For the PC, there are several.
